As a trained sculptor, I see dimensionally. All paintings are done in levels beginning on a brightly primed canvas. Next, darks and lights are separated ignoring all details. The next layer becomes more specific incorporating more details. Shadow areas often start with the complementary color and lots of paint is scraped away with complete disregard for edges. The last layer is the most difficult for me: details. Here I add highlights and depth sparingly, always mindful of energy, not specifics.
